Responding to the argument that climate change has always been going on
Even if you don’t believe the Climate Crisis is real, it will still interest you to read this
This is by far the most used argument by people who think that the climate crisis isn’t real. “The climate has always been changing — it’s just a natural thing.” And while the statement is technically true, it is not valid and misleading to say when it comes to what is going on today.
According to the Australian Academy of Science, “Earth's globally averaged surface temperature has risen and fallen by about 5˚C in ice-age cycles, roughly every 100,000 years or so.”
Here’s the thing — the Earth’a temperature has gone up more than 1°C in 143 years. The rate of heating and cooling is way too fast to be caused by nature, and is increasing — which means that it’s not just going to be increasing by 1°C every 143 years, and very soon it will reach 2°C. This is further backed up by a graph by NASA:
The sun is obviously not causing global climate change. And neither have there there been significant changes in Earth’s orbit in the last 150 years that could have caused this.
Since the preindustrial age, humans have released 1.6 trillion tons of carbon dioxide into the air. To clarify, carbon is not the enemy. The problem is that too much carbon overloads the planet’s natural carbon cycle, making it harder for it to adapt.
Just look at this graph made by the World Economic Forum tracking Earth’s overall climate for last 1,000 years:
And the temperature has increased even more since this graph was made, just 4 years ago.
Can we all finally agree that it’s not nature causing this extreme heating of our planet? Or that at least that this is largely the fault of humans? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
